This flu season, don't forget about your dog!
Canine Influenza is a newly emerging infectious disease caused by the virus H3N8. Canine flu is a highly contagious disease of dogs and, because the virus is relatively new, they have no natural immunity to the virus. About 80% of infected dogs will show signs of infection. Signs of flu in the dog include a cough which can persist for up to a month, low-grade fever, nasal discharge, and a lack of energy and appetite. Up to 20% of the infected dogs will have more severe signs and complications which can include a very high fever and pneumonia. A small number of dogs have died from complications associated with this disease. Diagnosis of flu infection can be difficult as the signs mimic those of Kennel Cough.
Most dogs, regardless of age or breed, are at risk for canine influenza. However, certain activities can increase your dog's risk of infection. Flamingo Pet Clinic recommends the vaccine for any and all dogs who: board at hospitals, kennels, or doggie-daycare (the vaccine is mandatory to board your dog with us); attend or participate in dog shows or other dog events; visit a groomer, the dog park, or engage in walks with other dogs; and those who come from a shelter, rescue, breeder, or pet store.

What is Vet-Stem?
Vet-Stem Regenerative Cells (VSRCs) are your pet's own natural healing cells that help regenerate injured tissues. The regenerative cells are derived from your pet's own fat. These cells are capable of differentiating into a variety of tissue types including tendon, ligament, cartilage, and bone. The use of VSRC therapy has been used successfully for osteoarthritis as well as soft tissue orthopedic issues. Currently, VSRCs can be used to help with arthritis of the knee, hip, and elbow as well as an aid in tendon and ligament repairs.
Dr. Hauck is credentialed in the Vet-Stem procedure. Collection of the fat does require anesthesia but the collection itself is easy and safe. After the fat is harvested from your dog, there is only a 48 hour turn around time and then the cells are returned to FPC to be appropriately administered to your pet.
